The Great Canadian Brunch (Patriotic Canada Day Smoothie+Bagel Recipe)

Happy Canada Day everyone! On July the 1st our great nation turns 149 years old and you better believe that this proud Canadian dietitian want’s to help you celebrate this special occasion in a healthy and patriotic way.

How are we going to do this you ask?  The Great Canadian Brunch!

Disclaimer: Those who have read my previous work will know that I am generally not a huge smoothie fan ( I’d rather you eat your fruits and vegetables whole) but on Canada Day we can make an exception.

Part I: The Great Canadian Smoothie

In developing the Great Canadian Breakfast Smoothie,  I had 3 primary goals:

1. To create something healthy, delicious and easy to prepare.

2. To create something that would turn out red-ish in colour.

3. To create something with at least 1 distinctly Canadian ingredient.

Here is what you need:

1 cup frozen raspberries

1 cup frozen strawberries

1 cup of milk or unsweetened milk alternative ( soy, almond, rice milk)

1 tbsp of 100% Canadian Maple Syrup

Part II: The Great-er Canadian Bagel

In coming up with the Great-er Canadian Bagel, I had a single goal to incorporate as many foods that are identified with Canadian culture as possible.

Here is what you need:

Montreal bagels

Smoked salmon

Ketchup chips

For those that may not know, these three foods are considered among the “Most Canadian” foods out there and make a delicious and relatively healthy compliment to the Great Canadian Smoothie.

(Unfortunately, I could not quite justify squeezing poutine into this brunch!)

The Final Product

I truly hope that you all enjoyed my Canada Day recipe tribute and I implore you go to prepare this patriotic brunch for yourself and your loved ones this Canada Day!
