Let’s face it, for the vast majority of us, winter sucks. It’s cold and dark and our motivation for exercise and other activities may be decreased.
The good news? Winter is almost over.
Many of us just aren’t as happy in winter and we often turn to food to help us feel better.
For this reason, savoury and indulgent foods are often associated with this time of year.
Unfortunately, loading up on calorie rich unhealthy foods will only make you feel worse, but I do have some great alternatives to propose to you.
Here are my top 5 food picks to lift your spirits and get you through to spring:
1. Popcorn ( home-made/Air popped preferably): Despite it’s bad reputation and association with movie theatres ( where it is often lathered in 100s of calories of butter) popcorn is actually a low-calorie feel good food that is a perfect winter pick me up. For those who don’t have one, I’d highly recommend adding an air popper to your winter wish list!
2. High % MF ( 5%~) Greek Yogurt: Let’s face it ice cream is a go-to feel good food for many people. One healthier alternative that I like to recommend is a higher % milk fat greek yogurt, which will contain a much higher nutrient density than almost all standard ice cream varieties and less calories per serving as well.
3. Nuts in the Shell: There is nothing quite like chowing down on your favourite tree nuts on a cold winters night. They are extraordinarily healthy and nutrient rich, yet can be easy to over consume. The solution? Purchase your nuts in-shell and crack them yourself. Not only do they taste better this way, but it will help you regulate your intake as well.
4. Home-made Granola: Forget the complex recipes and excessively fattened and sweetened store-bought varieties. Mix a few cups of rolled oats with a few tbsps of olive oil and maple syrup and throw it in the oven at 300 F for 20 minutes. Add sunflower seeds if your feeling adventurous.
5. Sliced Bananas/Apples with Peanut Butter + Cinnamon: Peanut butter is the ultimate feel good food and this list would not complete without it. Place it on top of sliced bananas and apples to make the ultimate easy + savoury snack.
There you have it folks, my suggestions for indulgent yet healthy winter snacks that will help get you through those cold days ahead without feeling guilty.
Until next time,
